Crazy Things I Have Done This Year Part 1 - 'No Poo'

So it's the 1st of December and another year is drawing to a close (wait....what?....where did it go?) and in honour of said event I thought it might be a good idea to do a little different 'year in review' kinda thingymadoobie. So Part 1 of "Crazy Things I Have Done This Year". And don't get freaked out by the title, I was still observing my daily ablutions.

The 'No Poo' Experiment

So being all educated and stuff I am sure ya'll have heard about this, but just in case 'No Poo' is where you basically stop using shampoo on your hair. That's not to say you go completely au naturale - the generally prefered method of cleansing is Baking Soda and a rinse of diluted Apple Cider Vinegar (note the capital's for dramatic effect!).If you want to read more about it here are a few places you can visit:

I, however, started this experiment with gusto and went completely product free. That means rinse only with water and massage the scalp. So how did that go Ruby? Well, I am glad you asked! Not only did I smell like a wet dog every time I showered, for about 8 weeks my hair had to be pulled back and my scalp was a raging itchy fest.It appears my combination of super oily hair and sensitive scalp just needs a little something from time to time! I was still enthusiastic though - after all I had gotten this far so why stop, even with my douchebag ex accusing me of  no longer 'looking after myself and taking no pride in myself' (Trying to stop loading my body with harmful chemicals is apparently 'not looking after myself' - go figure! But we have already concluded that he is an ass.).

Phase 2 was to give the Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar a go. Usually not being a proponent of the 'less is more' philosophy I went at this with great gusto. I discovered after a couple of weeks I was using far too much Baking Soda, evident by the 2 cm long split ends (which unfortunately had to be physically removed via a haircut - doh!). My previously itchy and now very irritated scalp was not a fan of the Apple Cider Vinegar rinse either, for obvious reasons. I messed around for a while with the measurements of Soda to Vinegar and yet still really struggled to get it right. My hair still carried the Au de Wet Dog and my scalp was not settling down at all.

Phase 3 - In desperation, largely due to my attendance at an interview for a job I really wanted, I returned to my faithful 'Yes to Tomatoes' Shampoo and Conditioner. I did try a couple more times after this initial 'Return of the Poo' to go back to Baking Soda and ACV but never found the combination to be as lovely as "My Tomatoes".

Phase 4 - Currently in progress, sees me alternating "My Tomatoes" with other natural shampoo brands. I try not to wash more than once a week which usually sees me having a few days of ponytails towards the end of the week. Still having some scalp issues, probably compounded by the fact that I have a tendency to pick at my scalp without realising I am doing it (TMI?). I am super excited though about trying out a new natural 'dandruff-defence' shampoo (sounds super awesome huh - dandruff DEFENCE, aint no little flaky fella's getting past this shit!) for my next wash.

I tend to pick at my scalp when I don't realise it too! as well as my nails, and any thing that can be removed from my body (except eye lashes. who rips off eye lashes.)
